Our Story

Founded on a belief that East African cuisine deserves its place among the world's great food traditions

The Beginning

Born in a Zanzibar Spice Market

Spice Route was founded in 2018 by Chef Amina Rashid and restaurateur David Kimaro with a singular belief: that the cuisines of East Africa — from the coastal Swahili kitchen to the highland cattle cultures of the interior — deserved serious culinary attention.

Amina grew up in Stone Town, Zanzibar, surrounded by the aromas of cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom that had drawn traders from Arabia, India, and Persia for centuries. After training in Paris and staging at restaurants in Cape Town and Nairobi, she returned to Tanzania with a mission.

"I wanted to create a restaurant where every ingredient told a story — where a guest could taste the Indian Ocean in a dish, or understand the highlands through a single spice." — Chef Amina

Our Philosophy

200 Kilometres. Every Ingredient.

Every ingredient on our menu is sourced within 200 kilometres of Dar es Salaam. From the spice farmers of Zanzibar to the fishing communities of Bagamoyo and the organic highland farms of Iringa — we are deeply committed to the people who grow our food.
